Hydrogen Water Machines: How They Work and How to Choose
Hydrogen Water Machines: How They Work and How to Choose
A hydrogen-water system is designed to dissolve molecular hydrogen
gas (H2) into drinking water. Different technologies do this in
different ways. When comparing them, the useful questions are
straightforward: how much dissolved H2 is produced, under what test
conditions, how much water the system can make, and what it costs to own
and maintain.
For product evaluation, record the dissolved-H2 concentration, the
measurement method, water temperature, flow rate or batch volume, and
the time between production and measurement. A single headline ppm
figure without these conditions is difficult to compare across systems.
[1][2]
The main ways hydrogen
water is produced
All four approaches can produce dissolved H2; they differ in
operating conditions, throughput and maintenance.
| Method | How it produces H2 | Practical profile |
|---|---|---|
| Flow-through electrolysis ioniser | Electrical current passes through an electrolytic cell. Hydrogen is generated at the cathode and dissolves into the drinking-water stream. |
Continuous output; performance can vary with flow, current, electrode design and incoming-water chemistry. |
| PEM / SPE bottle or generator | A proton-exchange membrane separates electrolysis products and allows hydrogen to be generated for dissolution into a defined volume of water. |
Batch production; portable formats are common. Record cycle time, volume and measured H2 concentration. |
| Gas-infusion system | Externally generated H2 gas is dissolved into water, sometimes under elevated pressure. |
Can achieve high dissolved concentrations depending on pressure and gas-transfer design. Compare pressure and measurement conditions. |
| Hydrogen-generating tablet | A chemical formulation, often magnesium-based, reacts in water to generate H2. |
No electrical device; output depends on formulation, water volume, reaction time and container conditions. Check ingredients and residual products. |
The specification to compare first: dissolved H2
Dissolved H2 should be reported in mg/L, ppm or ppb and measured
using a method that directly measures H2 or is calibrated against known
H2 concentrations. ORP is not a substitute for this measurement because
it is strongly influenced by pH, temperature and other redox-active
species. [2][3]
At about 25 C, water in equilibrium with pure H2 at an H2 partial
pressure of approximately 1 atmosphere contains roughly 1.6 mg/L. Higher
values can occur under higher hydrogen partial pressure or transient
supersaturation, so the correct response to a high number is to ask for
the production conditions and analytical method rather than applying an
absolute 1.6 mg/L cutoff. [1][2]
What to ask a seller or manufacturer
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the dissolved-H2 concentration under stated conditions? | A number without temperature, flow or batch volume, and timing, is hard to reproduce. |
| How was H2 measured? | Prefer a selective H2 sensor, calibrated analytical method or validated titration rather than ORP-derived estimates. |
| What water quality does the system require? | Electrolysis performance can depend on conductivity and mineral content; check the operating range for the specific model. |
| What filtration is included? | Filtration and H2 generation are separate functions. Verify any contaminant-reduction claim against an independent certification listing. |
| What maintenance is required? | Electrodes, membranes, cartridges, seals and generators have different service requirements. |
| What is the total ownership cost? | Include filters, tablets or consumables, servicing, electricity, parts and expected service life rather than only the purchase price. |
| What does the warranty actually cover? | Check exclusions, consumables, labour, shipping and local service availability. |
How Singapore tap water affects the comparison
PUB reported average conductivity of 232 uS/cm, average total
dissolved solids of 116 mg/L and average hardness of 42.7 mg/L as CaCO3
for January-December 2025. [4] These are useful background figures, but
they should not be used to guarantee performance for every ioniser.
Compare them with the manufacturer’s stated feed-water requirements for
the exact model.
PUB also states that Singapore tap water is safe to drink directly
without further filtration. [5] A hydrogen-water machine should
therefore not be sold on the premise that the municipal supply is
unsafe. If the device includes filtration, evaluate that filtration for
its own documented claims.
How to evaluate health-related marketing
A product’s ability to produce dissolved H2 is a technical
specification. It is not evidence that the product treats or prevents
disease. Human research on hydrogen-rich water is still heterogeneous
and does not support translating a ppm reading into a guaranteed
clinical outcome. [6]
For commercial communications in Singapore, claims should be
truthful, substantiated and presented without misleading exaggeration.
If a product falls within the medical-device framework, additional HSA
advertising requirements can apply. HSA requires medical-device claims
to be scientifically substantiated and prohibits misleading or
unqualified claims. [7]
A practical comparison sequence
- Define the use case: continuous household volume, portable batch
use or occasional preparation. - Verify dissolved-H2 output using reproducible test
conditions. - Check the feed-water operating range and whether your actual
water meets it. - Separate filtration claims from hydrogen-generation
claims. - Compare maintenance, consumables, service support and total
ownership cost. - Treat health claims as a separate evidence question; do not use
product concentration as a proxy for clinical efficacy.
