Are there health benefits to alkaline water?

Research studies from many years ago had shown positive results with alkaline ionized water. Those studies were also before 2007, where the therapeutic benefits of hydrogen gas were not yet discovered.

More recent studies have concluded that there is actually no benefit to drinking alkaline water. The body maintains a pH of 7.35-7.45, and it is very resourceful in keeping that pH levels tightly in that range. If at any point our body dips below 7.35, we’ll experience acidosis. Similarly, if it goes above 7.45, we’ll experience alkalosis1. Both conditions can cause death. The graph below presents health issues for both acidosis and alkalosis.

Fortunately, in ionized water, the alkalinity in the water has a weak buffer. That means you’ll need to drink a LOT of water – many times more than our required daily intake of water – before you will experience alkalosis. Hence, drinking alkaline ionized water is generally safe2.

That being said, while drinking alkaline water does not have negative health effects, it also does not have therapeutic effects on our body.

Hydrogen, on the other hand, has numerous documented benefits. You can learn more about hydrogen here and here.

  2. Be aware, though, that many alkaline ionizers have metal plates that, if not cleaned properly, can rust and/or corrode, leading to heavy metal poisoning.
